Me and Ian and Catherine

Filament magazine, "the thinking woman's crumpet," is currently giving away free books—including a copy of Rock My Socks Off! RMSO is in the giveaway stack with goodies such as the "definitive biography" of quirky rock legend Ian Dury and the newest memoir by Catherine Millet.

Here's some more info (and I quote):
"Questions will be drawn from Filament magazine Issue 3, so you'll need a copy to participate ... We'll put the questions up on our Twitter, Facebook and here on LiveJournal. You'll have 24 hours to answer ... If more than one person gets the right answer, we'll choose someone at random, or choose the most interesting answer, judged in a highly unscientific fashion ... The winner gets to choose the book they want ... If you win or even if you enter, we're not going to disclose your name or other details ... We'll keep running questions until we run out of books."

P.S. Keep up with the quiz questions by reading the most recent Filament blog entries.

What time is it?

It's Mammoth time! (At least if your clock is set to GMT—U.S. publication to follow.)

I'm in the just-released Mammoth Book of Best New Erotica 9 alongside such eroticists as Lisette Ashton, Kathleen Bradean, Rachel Kramer Bussel, M. Christian, Elizabeth Coldwell, EllaRegina, Mark Farley, Polly Frost & Ray Sawhill, Shanna Germain, D. L. King, Kristina Lloyd, Catherine Lundoff, Craig J. Sorensen, Donna George Storey, Alison Tyler, Saskia Walker, and Kristina Wright. As always, the volume is edited by the illustrious Maxim Jakubowski.

Here's a teaser from my "Ménage à Denim":
“Damn!” she suddenly said out loud, to an empty Thursday afternoon house. Damn. It had hit her with surprising suddenness how much she wanted to be unchastely in bed with both of them, to climb and be climbed on, to tickle all the places that really counted and feel intimately connected with all parties concerned, in sync and in heat. She was the woman who had it all, but suddenly she was feeling that she wanted to have it all at the same time. She wanted to be all of herself at once, not this or that compartment of herself.

And, with the clattering, blinding brilliance of familiar facts exploding into revelations, she amazed herself by noticing that she had never asked them.
Thank you, Maxim!

Klatch My Drift?

I woke up this morning to find that the fantastic Sommer Marsden had klatched me while I slept!

Yes, she's set up a "comment klatch" on her blog, to encourage Rock My Socks Off readers to post favorite snippets from my book. Now, isn't that one of the very nicest—and most creative—things you've ever heard of one writer doing for another? Yeah, me too. : )

Who Live at Leeds?

My book live at Leeds, that's who!

[Waterstone's interior photographed by the magnificent Saskia Walker. Thank you, Saskia!!]

[And did you know that an all-SW story collection was recently "Unleashed" for our delectation?! As a certain Amazon reviewer remarks, "this portfolio from a master erotic storyteller demonstrates twenty times over the breadth, depth, and uninhibited passion that make Ms. Walker's tales so memorable."]

["from Soho down to Brighton"!]

Note: Who footage is actually from the Isle of Wight (where Rock My Socks Off is also in stock at Waterstone's), but it's roughly contemporary with the famous Leeds concert.

Rhoads Show!

I'm guest-blogging today at the online home of the fabulous Roxanne Rhoads!

Roxanne, in case you haven't had the pleasure, describes herself with this delightful string of phrases: "freelance writer, erotic romance author and poet, story strumpet, tome loving tart, sexual connoisseur, creature of the night." So I think you'll like her! (Plus she's a card-carrying Sex-Kitten.)

Thank you, RR!

More from Xcite!

My new novel is thrilled to be sharing a release week with Xcite's Sex, Love & Valentines anthology! I'm in this collection with awesome authors such as—woohoo!—Janine Ashbless, Elizabeth Cage, Justine Elyot, Lucy Felthouse, Shanna Germain, Charlotte Stein, and Sophia Valenti! (Did I say, "Woohoo!"?)

Here's an excerpt from my story, "Beer Bottle":
Regardless of the reason for its condition, this not-quite-empty bottle symbolized one thing to me—unfinished business. To my mind, it was inextricably related to the opening she’d left me when she had departed: “I’ll be up for a while, if you want to call me.” Though she had not been the last to leave, the few remaining partyers had soon said their goodnights. Even after my perfunctory cleanup, I judged that only about fifteen minutes had elapsed since I’d hugged her goodbye.

I swigged the barely significant remnants of Eveline’s beer. In reality it tasted only like flat beer, but I fantasized that it tasted like her. I closed my eyes and imagined smelling it on her breath, as she leaned in close for a kiss. I contemplated how the beer would taste on her tongue ... and then I contemplated how her tongue would feel on my cock. I wanted another sip from this bottle—but it was bone-dry now.

And, hey, look at this! I'm also on a new Xcite audio CD, with my story "Impressionism." (N.B. I'm not the voice who reads it, only the voice who wrote it.)

Thanks for everything, Xcite!

Edit: Haha, correction made: Sex, Love & Valentines, Jeremy, not "Valentine's." I swear, I know how to use (or not use) an apostrophe correctly! (I was thinking Valentine's Day, I guess.)

Thank You

Yesterday was one of the most wonderful days of my life.

Now, I've been fortunate in terms of having encountered a lot of wonderful days, of various kinds. (In fact, thanks to my being with the person I'm with, even ordinary days around here are pretty wonderful!) But even in a life full of wonderful days, my book-release day was one of the most especially, memorably, over-the-top wonderful ones.

And it was you folks who put it over the top. Way, way over.

As the Rock My Socks Off official release date approached, I was very, very excited, of course. But I was also aware that official release days can be a little arbitrary in the modern publishing world. It's just the nature of the beast: a date is set, but when things are going smoothly the book actually becomes available a little prior to that. And no complaints about that! Thanks to my fabulous publisher, Xcite Books, things went super smoothly, and I had the thrill of seeing RMSO come into stock at both online and brick-and-mortar shops a few weeks ago. But this, I realized, might inevitably mean that the official release date could feel a little anticlimactic.

But, thanks to you, this was the opposite of that.

Once upon a time, one of my efforts (not erotica) saw an overseas release that was sort of a "big deal" to me (by my humble standards). This was before the Internet really took off. There was no easy way for the people "over there" who were excited about my release to communicate with me (and there was also somewhat of a language barrier). Consequently, the whole thing had a certain "unreal" feeling to me—like this exciting, important thing in my life was happening somewhere far away, and I couldn't really see it or participate in it or fully experience it.

And this was the opposite of that.

Whether relatively near or far in geographical terms, all of you made sure that my book-release day felt like a big deal. Not only did you populate my party with the most incredible bounty of praise, enthusiasm, liveliness, sparkle, and hijinks, but many of you generously decided to use your own blogs to promote my special day. (I don't know whether those were all done independently or a behind-the-scenes angel coordinated things—either way, you're all angels.)

This was huge for me, folks.

Huge.

I love you.

"Rock" Out (with Your Socks Out)!

Hi! It's now officially January 11 in the UK and points east ... meaning that it's now officially my new erotic novel's official release day! Officially!

‘Ladies and rocking horses ... I’ve been asked to say a few words. Unfortunately, I don’t have a few words, because I used them all up writing an article about this museum.’

That's one of my protagonists speaking, after he's had a few in chapter 17. Hmm ... maybe I'd better reclaim the mic.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present a novel that is very me. I don't mean that simply in the sense that its content is entirely authored by me (as opposed to an anthology). What I mean is that I wrote the book I really wanted to write, and I wrote it by drawing on my own peculiar—heheh, I mean particular—literary sensibilities.

As those of you who have been down this road know, it's kind of scary putting yourself out there like that ... but I feel good about it. It felt right to me when I put the ready-to-submit kiss on the manuscript, and it feels right to me holding the book in my shaky hands.

It's a quirky book, and I think that's as it should be. I wrote a book that no one else would have written. That's one of the things I value the most about being a writer, and also about the writing of others—of all you fellow writers: the individual approach.

So what kind of book did I write, with my individual approach? I wrote a madcap erotic romp, a story of a waggish man and woman (and friends) bantering and shagging their way through a lighthearted, whimsical plot. I wrote a novel in which sensuality and repartee, eros and comedy, go hand in hand. I wrote a book in which the protagonists get in a lot of not-very-serious trouble and have a lot of verbal, physical, and emotional fun.

It's a novel, so the plot had to be "big." This of course meant the structure and pacing had to be different from those found in my short stories. I think the tone is even somewhat different from that of any of my short pieces—because this element is probably, to some extent, dependent on the other elements. It feels nice to reflect that this work is not just a larger animal than the others I've created, but also to some extent a different animal. [Insert animal noises, to taste.]

I'm a guy for whom funny and sexy is a potent combination. Some of my favorite old movies are zany comedies that plunge the protagonists into comical situations that sizzle with their sexual chemistry and simmer with their lust. Frequently, the pair spend most of the film in some kind of antagonistic relationship—that's the "screwball comedy" template, and it's a damn fine one. But it doesn't always have to play out that way.

I wanted my protagonists to operate as a team from the start. This meant that the plot motivations, suspense, etc., had to come largely from outside the relationship. And, given my inclinations, this meant relying on the farcical complications of frivolous intrigue and the interpersonal twists and friction provided by supporting characters. I had such a good time!

And I had such a good time leading them through the scenes we don't see in old movies: the scenes where they fuck. And fuck. And fuck.

Because, after all, this is erotica first and foremost, whatever else it may be. And I'm proud to say that.

PARTY CHITCHAT:

Rock My Socks Off features representatives of what I personally find to be some sexy professions: scientists; academics; writers (yay!); visual artists. Also museum people—though the museum person in this book is actually not a sexy specimen, in my view. (That's by design; but if any among you find this character sexy, you go!) Some professions that got left out, but which are also on my "sexy" list, are librarians, theater people, and bar/restaurant staff.

Of course, individuals aren't defined by their careers, and people can be sexy, to themselves and to others, in any walk of life—and I sincerely hope they are. But speaking for myself, there are undeniably certain professions that spark my erotic imagination—that prompt me to envision alluring, fascinating, enchanting, sexually electric people. (And, as you can see from the list above, one of the elements that strongly contributes to that for me is intellectual/artistic passion.)

So ... I'm wondering what professions are sexy to you, and why—and, if you write, where and how you've used them in your work. Tell me all about it in the comments, and a randomly selected commenter will receive a free copy of—did you guess it?—Rock My Socks Off!

Oh, before we get to the best part—i.e., you—let me just review the RMSO "basics." (It wouldn't be much of a book-release party without the basics, would it?)

[Hmm ... should I try out Blogger's bulleted-list tool? Nah—that's sure to be asking for trouble.]

> Rock My Socks Off is now available from the publisher, wonderful Xcite Books. Xcite is based in the UK but will ship anywhere in the world.

> Many online and brick-and-mortar UK booksellers are stocking RMSO, and the book is also offered by online retailers in a number of other countries. An extensive list of places to buy can be found at my website.

> The official North American release of RMSO will occur later this year. Stay tuned!

> Speaking of "tuned": Have you checked out my "Rock My Socks Off" ditty? (Look for the AudioPal widget on the sidebar here, directly beneath the RMSO cover.)

> The official description of the book? Glad you asked:

Writer Jacob Hastings is uninspired by his latest assignment: a museum full of hideous rocking horses. But his socks are rocked by Normandie Stephens, a mischievous astronomer who can match his dry wit, quip for quip, and his sexual appetite, frolic for frolic, with energy to spare.

Thanks to Jacob’s public relations and the machinations of a feisty and frisky mentor named Kate, an impasse in Normandie’s career promises to blossom into either glory or disaster—with enigmatic photographer Susan and obtuse clubber Brandon along for the wild rocking-horse ride. Between farcical talk show appearances, sensuous threesomes, horny little quickies, sex-drenched romantic getaways, and close calls with utter embarrassment, the pace never lets up in this smart erotic romp.

> I'll be hitting the virtual road soon with a couple of excerpts/guest blogs! Watch this space for details of my upcoming appearances at Roxanne's Realm (this Thursday!) and M. Christian's Frequently Felt.

Thanks for joining me today to celebrate!

[Real-time note: I'm uploading this right before going to sleep, so my friends in the UK and points east can wake up to a breakfast party. I'll rejoin the party in the U.S.A. A.M.! : )]

Details, Details

I promised to return with the details of next Monday's party ... and here I am! Though maybe you can't see me behind this big stack of details that I'm carrying. Hold on a sec, I'll just—whoops ... uh-oh, I almost—DOH! [Sound FX]

Look at that: details all over my blog! Well, we may as well take a look at them, anyway, before we get down on our hands and knees to pick them all up (and so forth).

So ... on Monday, January 11(th, for "th" fans), Rock My Socks Off will officially be released by the publisher, Xcite Books. Yes, yes, I know I've already been making a lot of noise about the book (even apart from dropping stuff all over the floor) ... but this will now be official noise.

And as part of my official noise program, I'll be hosting that book-release party on Monday—right here, of all places! I'll be talking a little about how I approached writing my first erotic novel. But more importantly—because it's the guests that make the party—I'll be inviting you to participate in a little discussion (topic to be revealed at the party). And my friend the Random Number Generator has intimated (don't you love that word?) that commenters will be entered in a drawing (a lottery, that is, not a cartoon), with the winner receiving a free copy of ... guess what! ; )

Now then ... who wants to join me on the floor for, um, detail collecting?

Con[fidant] Game

So ... the other day, we had:

Socks/Fedora

+

Rock/Socks

=

Rock/Socks/Fedora
(à la rock-paper-scissors)

The ingenious Bearded Confidant was all over that:

Let's see . . . Rock beats Socks (off), Fedora covers Rock, and Socks mismatch Fedora?

[For best results, imagine that quotation with lots of reverb on it, as in a television character's memory of earlier dialogue.]

Nor was this mere idle chitchat on Confidant's part! For look what he's gone and drawn!

Thank you, O clever & colorful Confidant!!

Pretty Wonderful

If you've been reading the addictive blog of legendary erotica author/editor/publisher Alison Tyler, you'll know that one of the topics she's been educating us on lately is that of present-day realities for small publishers. In the current economy, and with so much in flux, the small-publishing picture is not always a pretty thing.

But you know what is a pretty thing? Alison's boutique erotica company, Pretty Things Press. I know you'll want to hear more on this subject ... so "come and see me" down below, after the song.

Wow, I love those mod sounds. And I love Pretty Things Press. Among my favorite PTP books are the Down and Dirty anthologies ("bite-size delights"); Juicy Erotica ("succulent sexiness"); the brilliant companion volumes Hers and His ("rich, impressive, and masterfully conceived" collections co-authored by AT and the marvelous Thomas Roche); and Sex & Candy, edited by the fabulous Rachel Kramer Bussel ("sweet confections and sizzling connections"). [The quotations, by the way, are from my Amazon reviews of these various titles.]

One of the things I love about small publishers is that each one has its own personality. Not to discount the importance of the literary personality of the authors and editors, of course ... but I find that a press as a whole also tends to have a certain "feel" to its product, even if it's a very loose set of characteristics that it might be hard to put one's finger on. To me, one of the things giving the PTP line its distinctive personality is a certain flavor of intimacy: when I, the reader, am inside one of these collections, I feel like I'm privy to all the horniness and sweetness, the pounding fucks and the sensuality, in a particular type of way that's hard to describe, but which I recognize each time I enter one of these lovely little books.

As you can see, the books are visually pretty, too. (Even the type design on the pages tastes good.)

Oh, and here's a small-publisher-friendly tip: When you're buying PTP books from Amazon, entering from this page helps the press even more, via Amazon's affiliate program.

Meanwhile in the virtual world ... the latest PTP news is that Alison has launched a line of sizzling e-books!

And hey there across the pond: For your convenience and delight, selected AT-edited or AT-authored collections that were originally published by PTP in the States are available in UK editions from another small publisher I love, my friends at Xcite Books!

It's all pretty cool, huh?

Now That We're All Partied Out ...

... I'm throwing a party! : )

Yes, right here at Socks/Fedora, I'll be having a little book-release party next Monday, January 11—the official UK release date of Rock/Socks. I'm not sure yet what games, sexual positions, and other party activities I'll be offering ... but I'll try to make it worth your while to drop by!

I'll furnish more details later this week, after I've paid a visit to the detail furnishings store.

My book will not complain at all if you judge it by the company it keeps.

As discussed yesterday, I now have the great honor, in the brick-and-mortar world, of being the middle of what has been described as a Kristina LloydAlison Tyler sandwich. Hold my calls! (I could easily stare all day at those two sexy names with that en dash inserted between them.)

Meanwhile in the virtual-bookstore world, I'm also in primo company, as shown in this "customers who bought also bought" screen shot from Amazon UK:

[In case your vision is as bad as mine ... that's Charlotte Stein making magic down there!]

Brighton Rocks ... the Socks!

Thanks to ace photographer Kristina Lloyd, we now have the first visual documentation of Rock My Socks Off in a bookshop!

Yesterday, KL peeked in at Waterstone's, Brighton, UK:

And her timing was brilliant: during the few minutes that she happened to be browsing the shop, someone evidently rearranged the erotica section, moving my book from its spine-out position on shelf A to a front-faced position on shelf B—placing it, coincidentally, right next to KL's five-star, best-selling classic, Asking for Trouble! (And with two Alison Tyler books as neighbors, to boot!) The mind boggles at the sheer good luck—or was it journalistic instinct?—that allowed Kristina, with camera serendipitously handy, to capture the "before" and "after" for me.

Rough-and-ready reporter Lloyd notes that "the shelves are right at the end of the fiction section, lowest 3 shelves. I had to kneel before them to do the pics. I enjoyed it!"

Thank you, Kristina!!
